Travel insurance
Medical insurance for travel abroad
Abroad, even a simple doctor's visit can cost more than the whole trip, and hospitalisation or transport home can run to tens of thousands of dollars. A travel medical insurance policy (MST) covers these costs. In the Insurance Center calculator you enter the countries, dates, purpose of the trip and the travellers' ages, and we request real prices from licensed insurance companies in Kazakhstan and show you the offers to compare.
Why you need a policy
For many countries, insurance is a mandatory condition for obtaining a visa. Entry to the Schengen countries generally requires a policy with coverage of at least 30 000 EUR, valid throughout the Schengen Area for the entire trip. But even if you don't need a visa, a policy protects you from unexpected expenses: in most countries, medical care for foreigners is provided only for a fee, and without insurance you will have to pay the bill yourself.
What travel medical insurance covers and does not cover
Usually covered
- Emergency medical care for sudden illness or injury
- Outpatient treatment, hospitalisation, medicines prescribed by a doctor
- Emergency dental care for acute pain
- Medical transportation and repatriation home
- Services of the assistance company that organises care
Usually not covered
- Planned treatment and flare-ups of chronic conditions, unless provided for in the contract
- Injuries sustained under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Sports and active leisure without the corresponding option
- Treatment not approved by the assistance company
- Cosmetic procedures and prosthetics
Deductible
A deductible is the part of the costs the traveller pays themselves for each insured event. A policy with a deductible is usually cheaper, but minor doctor visits within its amount are not reimbursed. If you are travelling with children or planning a busy itinerary, a policy without a deductible is more convenient. Deductible terms are shown in each offer — compare them along with the price.
Active leisure and sports
Skiing, diving, mountain cycling and other active leisure are considered higher risks. If an injury occurs during such an activity and the «active leisure» option was not selected, the claim may be refused. For professional and competitive trips, choose the «sport» purpose and specify the sport and your level of training — the rate and terms depend on this.
State the purpose of your trip honestly
Tourism, business trips, study and sport are insured on different terms. If the purpose in the policy does not match the actual one, the insurer has the right to review the payout.
How to choose the sum insured
| Coverage «at least» | When it fits |
|---|---|
| 15 000 USD | Short trips to countries with no visa insurance requirements |
| 30 000 USD/EUR | Schengen and most visa countries, standard tourism |
| 50 000 USD/EUR | Long trips, active leisure, travelling with children |
| 100 000 USD/EUR | USA, Canada, Japan and other countries with expensive healthcare, older travellers |
For Europe and Schengen the sum is set in euros, for other destinations in US dollars. If your route includes several countries, select all of them or the «Worldwide» option.
How to get a policy through Insurance Center
Trip details
Choose up to five countries, the dates, purpose, coverage, the active leisure option and the travellers' ages.
Choosing an offer
Compare real prices and terms from insurance companies and choose the one that suits you.
Application and policy
Enter your full name in Latin letters as in your international passport, your IIN and passport details. A manager will issue the policy and send it to your email.
What to do in an insured event
- Before going to a doctor, call the assistance company at the number stated in your policy. If life is at risk, first call the local ambulance and notify the assistance company as soon as possible.
- Give your policy number, full name and location, and describe the situation.
- Go to the clinic named by the assistance company and do not agree to treatment not approved by the insurer.
- If you paid yourself, keep all receipts, invoices, statements and medical reports.
- After returning, submit a reimbursement claim with the documents within the period set by the contract.
What to check before buying
Make sure the policy dates cover the whole trip, including travel time, and that the territory of cover matches your route. Check that your first and last names are spelled correctly in Latin letters — they must match your international passport, otherwise the consulate may not accept the policy. Keep the policy and the assistance number on your phone and on paper. Buy insurance in advance, not on the day of departure: this leaves time to compare offers calmly and correct your details if an error is found in the application. Details are provided for each traveller, including children.
